***Safety, think about it and do it.***

What is Ergonomics?

Ergonomics: The design of devices, spaces and systems

        for safety and efficiency.

Ergonomics focuses on the mechanics of the human body and interactions between

the human body and devices, spaces and systems.

Human Factors Engineering focuses on the mind-body interaction

with the surrounding environment including but not limited to:

Visual: Lighting, color contrast, glare, ultra violet exposure

Auditory: Sound and noise, volume level

Touch: Rigidness/elasticity and deformation of surfaces.

Thermal: Environmental and contact surface temperature

Chemical: Airborne (i.e.fumes), liquids, solids that can produce fumes

Sense of Space: Division of room space for productivity and reducing distraction

Proprioception: Perception of movement and spatial orientation of a body

arising from the sense within the body.

Ergonomics and Human Factors Engineering apply to:

Anything that has a human-device/space interface.

Essentially, if a person is going to come into contact with the item/space,

the needs and limitations of the human body need to be taken into consideration.

It is the job of ergonomics professionals to:

1. Promote safety

2. Teach safety

3. Design for safety

Safety is always being vigilant,

adapting to current conditions and

applying the concepts and tools of the

disciplines needed to keep all users safe.

The term "users" refers to anyone, a person or animal present in the environment.
